Full-time Applicants
A full-time student is one who takes 12 or more credits during a semester.
To apply for admission, students must submit an admission application with a non-refundable, one-time, $20 application fee to the Office of Enrollment Services. Applicants must also submit an official high school transcript showing graduation or anticipated graduation or a copy of their GED and scores. First-time students will be required to take a placement test prior to registration. For exemptions to the placement test, see “Basic Skills Assessment” on page 10. Applicants who wish to earn their GED should contact the GCC Office of Continuing Education at 856-415-2217 or 415-2218.
Part-time Applicants
A part-time student is one who takes fewer than 12 credits during a semester.
New part-time students must submit an application, a one-time, non-refundable, $20 application fee and an official high school transcript or GED for admission. Part-time students are encouraged to declare a major upon application, but may begin studies with undeclared majors. They may remain undeclared until registering for the 12th credit, at which time they must declare a major. Students with undeclared majors are considered non-matriculated and are not eligible for financial aid. Part-time students must take a placement test prior to reaching the 12th credit, and will be placed according to the test results.
Part-time students wishing to register for any 100-level (also called college-level) mathematics or English courses must take the placement test prior to registration for those classes. If the placement test has not been taken upon registration for the 10th credit, part-time students will not be permitted to enroll in any course which has reading as a prerequisite. For exemptions to the placement test, see “Basic Skills Assessment” on page 10.
You can apply online to GCC using our online application . You will be asked to supply credit card information (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted) before submitting the application. If payment by check is preferred, download the GCC application via the Web site or use the application located at the end of this catalog and mail to Office of Enrollment Services, Gloucester County College, 1400 Tanyard Road, Sewell, NJ 08080.
Returning Students
Returning students are those who previously attended GCC but have not been in attendance for one or more semesters. Students whose last date of attendance was prior to 2002 must complete a new admission application before registering for any courses.
In addition, students who applied to GCC but never attended must reapply for admission if it has been three or more years since the date of their last application.
Returning students who have not yet satisfied the placement testing requirement should call 856-415-2248 or 415-2268.
Home-Schooled Students
GCC recognizes the value of home schooling and welcomes home-schooled students to enroll in full- or part-time studies. Homeschooled students must follow the same steps for general admission as high school graduates, including completion of the College’s basic skills placement test. In addition, home-schooled students must submit documentation of their academic work in transcript form, if available. In lieu of a formal transcript, a signed letter will be accepted from the primary instructor, verifying that the student has successfully completed the equivalent of a high school education.
Home-schooled students applying to selective admission programs will be required to submit formal documentation to verify completion of course and testing prerequisites. For more information, contact the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209.
Matriculation
A matriculated student is one who is working toward a degree or certificate. Students are classified as “matriculated” when they have been officially accepted to the college, are enrolled full- or part-time, and have indicated a program of study they intend to pursue. All students must matriculate before registering for their 12th credit. Students without a declared program of study are not eligible for financial aid.
Applicants to GCC who do not have a high school diploma or GED may be accepted as matriculating students on a full- or part time basis under the 30-Credit Plan. This program allows students to earn up to 30 college credits at GCC while preparing to take the GED. They must have earned their high school equivalency diploma in order to continue their enrollment past 30 credits. Information on the 30-Credit Plan is available by calling the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209.
Transfer Students
Students who attended other colleges or universities before GCC are considered transfer students. Transfer students must follow the same application procedures as first-time college students. Because of its open admission policy, GCC does not require transfer students applying for general admission to submit official copies of college transcripts as a condition of acceptance. Transfer students applying to selective admission programs are required to submit official college transcripts.
Transfer students in any program who wish to have their previously earned college credit applied toward their GCC degree or certificate must do so by following the transfer credit procedure outlined below.
Transfer students must satisfy the placement testing requirement or provide proof of exemption. Please call the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209 for more information.
International Student Applicants
Gloucester County College welcomes international students as valuable participants in a diverse and global educational community. The College is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant aliens as F-1 students. International students must attend the College on a full-time basis.
Because of GCC’s size and location in southern New Jersey and its semi-rural environment, prospective international students should be aware that:
- Language proficiency is necessary as GCC does not have an intensive ESL (English as a Second Language) program;
- GCC is a commuter college and dormitories are not available. GCC does not maintain a housing referral list;
- Transportation is needed as public transportation is limited;
- International students are not eligible to apply for financial aid, and therefore must enter the college with full financial support;
- Tuition is determined on the basis of the out-of-state rate. There are currently no additional special fees for international students; and
- Mileage to locate Gloucester County College
From New York City 99 mi. (2.0 hours driving)
From Philadelphia 20 mi. (45 minutes driving)
From Washington, D.C. 142 mi. (2.5 hours driving)
To apply:
Obtain an international student information packet from the Office of Enrollment Services. International applicants must submit the following credentials for evaluation before an acceptance letter and I-20 form can be issued; these credentials must be received by the GCC Office of Enrollment Services by July 15 for fall-semester applicants, and by November 15 for spring-semester applicants:
- A completed admission application with a one-time $20 non-refundable fee;
- An official transcript of high school work including graduation status. International credentials must be translated into English and certified as correct;
- A minimum TOEFL score [of 500 (paper), 173 (computerized) or 61 (internet-based)] or other acceptable documentation of English proficiency is required for admission of international students coming from countries where the primary language of education is other than English; and
- A notarized statement that a sponsor will be responsible for all financial needs of the student while he/she attends GCC. This statement must be accompanied by the sponsor’s tax records, bank statements, or letter from an employer. Otherwise, a bank statement supplement will be required. Statements and supplements are located in the international student information packet.
Following admission, international students will be required to take the College’s placement test and remediate any deficiencies. Students enrolled in a bilingual or English as a Second Language (ESL) program should not be tested until they have completed such a program and taken the TOEFL.
The estimated annual budget, for immigration purposes (2007– 08 academic year), including tuition and fees, room and board, transportation, personal and summer expenses is $16,729. Contact the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209 for more information.
