The Gloucester County College cross country teams competed at the NJCAA Northeast District Championships in Westfield, Massachusetts this past weekend. Several runners earned All-District honors, and the men’s team returned home with a 2nd place trophy.
The women started the day with their 5k championship race. The team worked well together, running in two solid packs. In the end, there were several sprint battles to the finish, with the roadrunners outpacing the competition. Amanda Dole made a huge move in the last half mile of the race to go from fourth place to challenging for the win. She made a valiant move, but was held off in the final stretch for second place. Amanda ran her fastest time of the season and earned All-District honors with her 2nd place finish. Tracy Dobkowski was close behind, with her fastest time of the season for All-District honors in 5th place. Rounding out the scoring, and also running her fastest time of the season, was Sam Moyer. The women finished in 3rd place behind Suffolk Community College and The Community College of Rhode Island.
The men’s 8k championship race was a much closer team battle. Right from the start, several teams had numerous runners in the lead pack vying for the individual championship. The GCC Roadrunners who were running with the leaders were Andre Thompson, Alec Connelly, Rob Griffith and Kevin Walsh. As the race progressed, the Roadrunner men also worked together in several packs. At the halfway point, it became obvious that Andre Thompson was keeping himself in position to win the race. Andre, the Region 19 champion, was locked in a battle with the Region 15 champion from Suffolk Community College. In a repeat of the women’s race, it came down to the final half mile of the race. Andre was able to use his strength and speed to win with his fastest time of the season and become the first district champion for the GCC men since the 90’s. Alec Connelly battled a cold as well as the competition to place 9th and earn All-District honors. Also earning All-district honors with 11th and 12th places respectively were Rob Griffith and Kevin Walsh. Rounding out the scoring, with his best race of the season was Anthony Higareda, placing 20th and securing a team 2nd place trophy behind winner Suffolk CC. Both teams will travel to the NJCAA National Championship in Canandaigua, NY next weekend.
