The Gloucester County College roadrunners were the host for this year’s Region 19 Cross Country Championships. Runners from all of Pennsylvania and New Jersey converged over the weekend to battle each other, the terrain and the ever-changing weather.
The first race featured the men in an 8000m battle through the woods, wind and rain. Right from the start, the Gloucester County men took command of the race, leading the pack through the first mile. As the race progressed through the hills, the strength of the roadrunners continued to push them ahead. Leading the charge for the entire race, and pulling away from the pack within the last mile, was Andre Thompson to win the Region 19 individual championship. He was followed closely behind by Alec Connelly in 2nd and Kevin Walsh in 5th place, with all three of these roadrunners earning All-Region honors. The rest of the team ran great even with several battling the flu and injuries. The team was rewarded for all of their hard work with a team championship, winning the Region 19 title for the first time since 2007. Top 3 Team Scores: Gloucester CC = 31, Cumberland CC = 42, Brookdale CC = 69.
Ocean County College runners, who are currently ranked #1 in the national polls, dominated the women’s race. The Gloucester County College lady roadrunners faired well despite the fierce competition and had their best showing against the top ranked team in the country. Amanda Dole and Tracy Dobkowski, who worked together throughout the race to finish in 4th and 5th places respectively, earned All-Region honors to lead the team. The rest of the ladies kept a tight pack together to help the roadrunners place 2nd in the meet. Top 3 team Scores: Ocean CC = 19, Gloucester CC = 47, Cumberland CC = 69.
The Roadrunnners will be back in action next Saturday at the District Championships held in Westfield, MA and then the season will conclude with the NJCAA National Championship race in Canandaugia, NY on November 7th.
